Are you wondering what The Feldenkrais Method actually is?
In a nutshell, The Feldenkrais Method is an approach to movement, posture and breathing which can improve flexibility, co-ordination and ease of moving.

My Feldenkrais journey
My background is in dance – mainly Contemporary Dance and Contact Improvisation (an improvisational duet movement form). In my early 30s I developed a debilitating back pain. At the time I was part of the Contact Improvisation scene in London - attending classes, teaching, organising events, editing a newsletter and involved with an artist-led dance space in East London. When my back pain became acute I had to stop dancing altogether, which was devastating for me, as dance was my life. I consulted various practitioners such as physiotherapists and osteopaths, but none helped. In fact none of them could see any ‘problem’ with me, despite the fact that I was in pain. A friend suggested I try Feldenkrais, so I went to see a practitioner, who was also a dancer. He asked me to do a few simple movements such as turning my head, reaching my arm, looking up and down. What intrigued me was, not that he attempted to fix my ‘problem’, but that he made observations about how I did things - like turning more easily in one direction, compared to the other. At last I felt seen and heard. |
Over time I learned to feel ease and pleasure in moving
I continued with individual sessions and classes and eventually found myself on a four year professional training course. During that time I became more and more aware of my sensations and how I was moving at a very subtle level. I was able to undo some of the patterns of tension that I had developed which were contributing towards the discomfort in my back. I also learned to see the things differently - I slowed down, found out how to listen to myself and heed my limitations. Over time I learned to feel ease and pleasure in moving - rather than just being focussed on the pain, as I had been. After two years my back pain disappeared. As the training progressed and in the following years I gradually found my way back to doing the things I loved - like walking, swimming and dancing. |
Feldenkrais gave me my life back and I knew I had to use it help others
I have been teaching Feldenkrais since 2000, at first in London, then North East Scotland where I lived for 9 years and since 2014 in the South West of England. I am based in Frome, Somerset and offer classes here and workshops in Bristol. Over the years I have taught in many higher education institutions, working with dancers and actors including, in recent years: Mountview Theatre School, University of Creative Arts in Farnham and for seven years at Bath Spa University where I taught Movement for Actors until 2022. |
